Railroad ties are wooden cross braces that support two runs of track. In Europe they are referred to as “sleepers”. TTI’s railroad ties are made from very hard and durable tropical woods. There are approximately 3,249 ties permile based on 19.5 centers. Wooden ties make up 93% of the railroad tie market. These are made up of Midwestern hardwoods. Tropical hardwood ties are stronger than the domestic counter parts and require no additional treatment. TTI provides ties for tracks that run through wetlands where treatment is not allowed and deterioration is rapid in domestic species.
